Silvics Training Classes Now Certified for CFE Credits!

by Admin 8. October 2008 04:25

Silvics is pleased to announce that our training classes* are now certified by Society of American Foresters for 8 hours of Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits!  From now on, our 2-day training course will count towards your annual certification requirements.  We train you in a relaxed setting at our home office in Birmingham or at your location if desired.  Availability for each class is limited to 10 people, though more classes will be added if required. Our training classes last approximately 1.5 days and consist of 4 learning modules, offering an introduction to GIS using IFMS Forester’s Desktop® as a model:

Module 1: Introduction to GIS – In this module we cover the general layout of GIS applications from a forester’s perspective.  This includes concepts such as spatial layers, topology, displaying and selecting features, map projections, labeling and thematics, and interrelationships of data types found in a GIS.
Module 2: Data Management and Querying – Building on the framework from the Introduction, you will learn approaches used to obtain information from a GIS database for reports and analysis as well as custom map creation.  Additional time is devoted to custom GIS tools such as organization of data into folders and notebooks to promote wise data management and warehousing.
Module 3: Silviculture and GIS – We delve into approaches you can employ to prescribe management activities in a GIS.  You’ll learn how data are incorporated into a GIS from timber cruises, how data are modified with harvesting, and how data is summarized with reporting and auditing tools.
Module 4: Geographic Editing in GIS – In the final module, we dovetail your knowledge of silviculture into a hands-on demonstration of map feature editing.  Using drawing and tracing tools in GIS, you’ll learn about boundary editing and splitting and combining geographic features.

At the end of the course you will receive an official certificate of completion for your records.  Training courses are offered on an as needed basis.  Contact us for specific dates and locations.

Best,
Silvics Solutions Staff

*This program has been reviewed and is approved for professional CFE credits by the Society of American Foresters. Category 1-CF: 8 hours

ForestPro Manager 7.1.07: Added Sales Summary Pivot Table

by Admin 12. August 2008 09:44
In order to meet our clients demands, we have added pivot tables in all of the modules within the ForestPro Manager except Administration and GIS.  This allows the users to customize tables in order to meet their reporting needs such as cut out analysis.  Once the tables are created, they can then be saved on the server under "my documents".  Each user has his or her own "my documents" folder that allows them to save pivot tables in order to give them the ability to re-link the tables to the database after adjustments or changes have been made.  The attached videos demonstrate how simple a sales cut out analysis can be created and saved.

IFMS Tip: Selecting multiple nodes at once

by Admin 6. August 2008 07:04

Did you know that you select more than one node at a time for deletion?  To do so, simply use the node tool to pick the first node in the group you want to edit, hold down the CTRL key, and pick the end node in the group.  IFMS will find the shortest path between the nodes you selected, and pick all the intervening nodes for you!  From there, simply press the delete key, and you're done!
